Visiting & Lodging
Dover is one of the easiest Morris County towns to explore without treating the visit as a suburban driving tour. Its historic Blackwell Street core, NJ TRANSIT station, restaurants, theater, public parks and community events are concentrated in a compact area.
Come for a downtown meal, a self-guided history walk, spring cherry blossoms at Hurd Park, a performance at Dover Little Theatre, or use Dover as a transit-connected base for exploring western Morris County.
Start With Downtown Dover
The best first-time visit begins around Blackwell Street and Dover Station. The central blocks combine historic architecture, international restaurants, small businesses, public spaces and several of Dover's best-known landmarks.
Blackwell Street Historic District
Established in 1982, the approximately 25-acre historic district includes 52 contributing buildings plus other contributing resources across Blackwell and adjoining streets.
Baker Opera House
16 West Blackwell Street
Built in 1880, the towered brick building once housed retail on the first floor, offices above and an opera house on the third floor.
Historic Baker Theater
37–41 West Blackwell Street
A major vaudeville-era landmark associated with performances by nationally known entertainers. The historic structure remains a prominent downtown feature.
Dr. Condict House
55 West Blackwell Street
Historic property associated with the Dover Area Historical Society and one of the key stops on the town's self-guided walking tour.
Triangle Park
Small downtown park at Prospect and West Blackwell Streets with Dover's 9/11 Memorial, including steel from the World Trade Center.
Downtown Food
Dover's compact center is especially strong for Mexican, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Dominican, Peruvian and other Latin American food, along with pub, Italian and Chinese options.
Hurd Park & Dover's Green Spaces
Hurd Park
Six-acre passive park donated to Dover in 1911. It features a Greek-style pavilion, Veterans Walkway, memorials and Jackson Brook.
Best known for: Kwanzan cherry trees that create a striking pink display each spring.
Water Works Park
Parkland along the Rockaway River with a picnic pavilion, playground, open field and wooded area. A marked roughly three-quarter-mile River Trail Walk adds an easy nature walk.
Crescent Field
Chestnut Street recreation complex within walking distance of downtown with basketball courts, turf soccer fields, walking path and fitness parcourse.
JFK Memorial Commons
Created on the former Morris Canal basin with walking paths, mature trees, benches, gazebo and children's playground. Community events are held here during the year.
Hooey Park
Neighborhood park in the Salem Village area with basketball and a children's playground.
Outdoor Etiquette
During Hurd Park's spring bloom, enjoy the cherry trees without climbing, shaking or pulling branches so the display remains healthy for future visitors.
Dover Little Theatre
Dover Little Theatre, 69 Elliott Street, is an intimate 100-seat volunteer community theater just off Blackwell Street. Founded in 1933, it presents mainstage productions, children's theater, comedy, concerts and other special events.
Events & Community Activity
Dover's public spaces and downtown businesses host recreation programs, arts events, civic gatherings and seasonal celebrations throughout the year.
Getting Here by Train
Dover Station is one of the town's biggest visitor advantages. It is close enough to the historic downtown that many trips can begin on foot rather than with a car.
Parking in Dover
Dover operates municipal parking lots around the station and downtown. NJ TRANSIT currently publishes several Dover municipal lots, including locations around Orchard Street/Legion Place, East Dickerson Street, Bergen Street, Thompson Avenue and the South Morris/Monmouth area.
